After a few years in the hobby with lots of fish with way to small tanks, like bettas, goldfish and neon tetras in 3l bowls I actually started learning, I got 2 tanks after that, both 30l. Wanted to breed clownfish:rolleyes: and just setup a simple marine instead. But enough of that stories. After a few failed attempts of getting motivation to set up a planted tank, it finally happened. I bought a 30l from 4m in Benoni as they were cheapest and someone could bring it for me a few days later, I also got Langa from them and Hikari shrimp cuisine.
What do I have so far:
    30l Tank R165
    Heater R150 (already had)
Sponge filter and airpump R50 (airpump and tubing I already had)
    1kg Langa soil R65
    Hikari shrimp cuisine R85
    Fire moss and hornwart R50
Floodlight (Found a 10w in our garage, needs cord and plug)

    Total: R415
Now I only need shrimp which will be R400 for 10 green jades.

I will post pictures of the tank when my mom gives me my phone back:thumbup:

For now I'm letting this tank cycle.

    Congrats!
    - R40/shrimp for jades are cheap
    - They are neocaridina so like the water on the harder side
    - for shrimp best to let the tank cycle for a month. Add a few ramshorn snails to get things going and keep the tank cycled going forward. Add a small pinch of fish food daily

Thankyou. Yeah I'll let tank cycle for 1-2 months, I also added stability. What do you mean water on the harder side?
And I'll get a few snails maybe

    Just a little update

Getting the floodlight ready for the tank today, then I'm thinking of adding shrimp next week.

Google neocaridina water parameters, then you’ll see what I mean about harder water. But they’re generally also pretty forgiving. But they need minerals eg calcium to molt successfully

Just a quick update: Hornwart growing nicely and fixed the light yesterday. Can I put a betta in the tank If I want to breed shrimp? There's hornwart and lots of flame moss.

Steer clear from Betta's in the same tank if you intend having any left by the end of the week. I made a similar mistake and lost all my shrimp to the Betta.

If I'm not mistaken it is possible to breed neocaridina and caridina in the same tank. Would neon tetras be a good add or no?

Neons would actively hunt the shimplets, but it is possible if the tank is densely planted.

Yeah it's heavily planted, just waiting for plants to grow abit. I'll add about 6 neons and see if they'll eat the baby shrimps

Agree. My 2 betas are fine with shrimp but that might not always be the case. If your main focus on breeding shrimp then don’t keep betas with them. Sho some of the worst shrimplet eating culprits I’ve come across personally are rummy noses, neons and platys.

Morning all. It seems that an update is due. Tank has been running smoothly for about 3 months, all I did was top-ups. Plants have grown a lot and I might trim them soon. I also have some algae at the top in some of the plants. Have a few snails in tank, still pretty small but haven't got any shrimp yet as I'm out of money as I'm setting up a new marine tank:rolleyes:

I'll see if I can post some pictures tonight and get a few shrimps this month:lol:

If anyone has plant trimmings they willing to get rid of please pm me. I also have some flame moss trimmings to trade or give away.

Morning all. Soon I'm getting my shrimp, but I think I'd like to get a piece of driftwood and some amozon zords.
