Murdering Butterfly fish question

Ok, so nobody laugh! Woke up this morning and found all 3 guppies murdered (my daughter was hysterical lol!)
Is it possible that my butterfly fish did this? My daughter blamed the butterfly fish because "he's ugly". the guppies werent eaten, only killed.

 

What else is in the tank ?

 

Know it should not be funny but .

 

There is a knife fish which should be the obvious culprit but it's a baby - He/she is very small, I thought i would put the guppies in another tank when the knife fish got a little bigger. The guppies seemed to share the same space as the butterfly fish, as they didn't seem to go down (hex tank). so the guppies stayed mostly on the top (except the one female who was a little braver)

 

What size tank do you have? Knife fish can get very big, half a meter or so

 

We'll have a bigger tank by the time he gets bigger, I'm looking into getting a longer one already - this hex tank is pretty for the corner of the lounge, but its and absolute pain. It's so tall, that to change anything at the bottom is almost impossible, i cant plant nicely or anything like that, and i stand there with extra long braai tongs everytime i need to reach something at the bottom or move a rock or plant. it's just not ideal.

I'm looking into getting a wide tank already, so he will have a new home when he needs one. This hex tank is pretty for the corner of my lounge, but it's so impractical. Its so tall that I cant reach the bottom to plant or move anything, so everytime i need to move, or remove i stand on the couch next to it with extra long braai tongs - it's just not practical.

First off, guppies and butterflies and knife fish are not good tank mates. do a little reading on knife fish and you will see they are actually quite problematic as far as tank mates are concerned.

From time to time I feed smallish guppys to my Butterflies...

I'm going to get a 2 m tank to put the knife into. any ideas on what i can put in the tank with him? I'll get some other peaceful fish to go in the hex with the butterfly

 

Defiantly the Butt' fish. My guppies started to disappear when I had them in the same tank.
