Wanted: Mosquitofish and Killifish

Hi guys, i've been giving everything a thought, and thought of getting mosquitofish and killifish for my pond.
Does anyone in the Boksburg / Primrose area got some to sell me perhaps, please?

And if so, how much do you sell at?

Mosquito fish? Those are like guppies right?

Killis in a pond? Green Panchax is pretty common so you might be able to get those.

How big is the pond?

 

Won't it become too cold for them perhaps in winter?

 

Mosquito's are tough as hell, they will be ok. not sure about kilifish

 

Blacklisted... Mosquito fish are on the black list so I doubt that you would find, and as for killifish, most are a delicate specie that could never really take living in a pond very well... Sorry to bear bad news...

 

Maybe consider getting, White cloud minnows. I have been keeping them in an unheated aquarium for 3years now.

 

I saw mosquito fish advertised on Gumtree last night.. :thumpdown: if they're blacklisted...

It's a 300 liter pond, not big...

There's currently one gold fish in the pond, but he keeps hiding...

 

Funny though.. I saw a mosquito fish farm in Pretoria advertising in the classifieds today.. Are you sure they're blacklisted?

Are they blacklisted for importing, breeding or selling? That may be the difference. Mice are blacklisted for selling as snake food, so now they are sold as pets... Maybe something similar is happening here? Just a very wild guess...

 

Then you would buy a new pet every week lol

Every Lake on the East Rand has Mosquito Fish in it. I lived in Boksburg , every water puddle has them. Killi`s, mmmmmmm not so sure , mine don't like the extremely cold weather we have on the East , South East Side of Jozi. Summer yes, winter don`t think it`s a good idea.

 

Will have to take the kids to a lake one Sunday with plastic cups... And say we're going on a picnic lol

 

Mate , Go for White Cloud Minnows , more colourful. I hate Mosquito Fish , they are a plague.

Don't they look similar to neons?
What do they price +/-?

 

They're more attractive than neons in my opinion. Red fins with yellow tips, also have an iridescent line. They sell here in Cape Town for around R10.00 (I remember when they were the cheapest fish you could get at R2.50 when neons were R4.00...)

 

@Nirv suppose prices on some fish will even go up more now with the rand dollar exchange rate, it will only get worse.

Told my misses that I'm done buying guppies now, will breed what I've got.
But ja, i know myself to well as well. I know, one of these days I'm bringing another plastic bag home.... But it will be with something else in it...

Will probably take like R100 and see how many Minnows i can get for it, weather it be white cloud or zebra i don't know, but we'll see.

 

Bud, they`re lovely , look similar to Neons , but more Beautiful in my opinion. On the East Rand there are people that breed them in ponds , out doors and the Minnows are quite comfortable.

I guess depending on here you look , between R15.00 to R20.00
