Mosquito netting

How safe is the Mosquito netting that you buy from builders?
is it shrimp and aquarium safe?

Im having problems with fish and shrimp going over my overflow and down into the sump

 

Great idea. I pulled an old sykous over my HOB's suction end. But that gets clogged so quick.

I can't see that there would be a problem.

 

I used a piece of swimming pool net but it also tended to clog up. Now I use a block of very coarse sponge (think it was Fluval brand) to cover my overflows.

 

It shouldn't be a problem, but double check before purchasing, as some products are treated with a mosquito repellant.

I doubt mine would be treated. It was cheap generic stuff
I also had the sock idee but assumed it would clog up. Wont the filter foam also require regular cleaning to prevent clogging up and influencing the flow?

I used to use a Pool Gobbler, but it clogged up so quickly, every 2nd day or so. I was woken up many a night by the sound of my sump pump running dry, because of the clogging. I switched to platic mesh that I got from Builders (it comes in Green,White,Brown & Black).No more fish in the sump and only the odd RCS and I only have to clean it once a week. Funny thing though I must have missed a couple of RCS in my sump (proberly hiding in between the lava rock) and now have a thriving RSC colony living in my sump, last count +- 30 and I never fed them.

 

For anyone wondering what i did
I cut out a piece of perspex that will fit the overflow box and cut hole in the piece
Glued the netting to the piece and viola

It does raise the water level a bit but it does a excellent job
