    Since i got these Morays (Gymnothorax Tile) I have been wondering if i should not have a Special tank for a few of these. I love them so much. Really great fish. I would like to get different species of them too. All legal white list obviously. If you think its a good idea, what fish should i keep with them. I am thinking some Mono/finger fish, puffers, archer fish etc. Mostly fish that can take a little more salt in the tank.[h=1][/h]

    Hi there

    I'm sure you've checked out my old tank thread here?

    Anyways, I kept mine as a species tank for the most part, because my attempts to mix them with other species didn't turn out so well. I tried some large, schooling glassfish to no avail. The Monodactylus sebae lasted a bit longer, but eventually fell prey one night.

    This isn't to say that it can't be done. My morays didn't touch each other (keeping two together), and I doubt they'd do anything to other species of moray either. However, as with marine morays, if you're going to keep multiple specimens, make sure that there are far more nooks and crannies than you need! If not, the morays can and will fight over preferred spots. If you're going to try, I recommend the Echidna rhodochilus - it's the second most common brackish moray that I know of,

    Also, if you look around the internet, you'll see that other people have had success with other non-moray species. Most notable, success wise, appear to be archerfish. They're large and occupy the upper areas of the tank, and so don't have much to do with the moray's activities. Larger Monodactylus work too, but you'll have to introduce them at a larger size, it seems.

    Good luck, and keep us posted.

    Those are such cool fish man. Where did you get the different species. I need to ask my LFS to source me some of those seen as though you have just made my mind up on the dedicated tank. Only problem is my Cleaning lady. LOL. She already does not want to go into my Braai room because of the Ropefish. Wonder what she will do if she sees an Eel pop out of a hole. rofl.

    @Frank007301

    Only the Gymnothorax tile were housed together, and they were the only brackish ones. The others, all marine, were caught locally.

    @Reedfish

    Unfortunately not. I had to move to a different town to do my studies, so I had to sell them all off a while back.

    Very, very nice. The patterning on yours is much more pronounced than it was on either of my two. Even between them the colouration was a little different. Whether this has something to do with age or geographic variation, is something I would like to look into one day.

    Added 4x Monos, a African knife and a spotted puffer to the tank. Still looking for other types of Morays here in Cape Town. If anyone knows where to get please PM me.

    Why did you add the African knifefish to the tank? It is in no way brackish, and every other species in there, while brackish now, will need marine water eventually. You'll likely need to move it soon.

    No no all those are in a freshwater tank at the moment. I have added a little salt to the tank for now until my tanks get here on Friday. I have to wait until Wednesday next week to fill them. Then they will be dedicated fresh water tanks. I cant wait. I have everything waiting and ready to go. Even got my granite bases for the tanks and lights installed but enough about that.

    Once that is all done i will convert my 4foot into a brackish tank. All the fish that i have bought now are being sold as fresh water. The problem comes in when beginners are sold these fish as fresh water and kept in fresh water. Granted many people have said that they can be kept as fresh water but not their whole lives.
