Modifying a standpipe in a bottom drilled tank

Hi all,

I recently bought a tank second hand. It is bottom drilled for the sump. I would like to modify the standpipe and would like to run my idea past those of you in the know! Please correct my logic if it is flawed!
1. Current configuration - "A" is open to allow airflow in
2. Proposed configuration - "B" is a Durso standpipe; "C" is a perspex box around the standpipe


Basically, the perspex box around the standpipe is to hide the pipe, create a safe overflow (don't want fish in the sump ), and to allow me to lower the main inflow to the sump without lowering the tank level too.

I'm pretty sure this setup is fine. Just need a few "aye"s to settle my nerves

 

I've done a durso on my 1.8m tank and your logic is perfectly correct.

Are you modifying to reduce noise? have you considered a maggie muffler ? Swear I saw some in a LFS but cant recall now...
