I am not sure if it is even possible to get enough to treat a 1000l tank!! But where can i try? So far I have tried Panorama Vet, Welgelegen Vet, Panorama Pet shop... all no help. I may have a friend who's tank can be used to concentrate the fish so less dosage is needed.

How much are you dosing? When I dosed my 3 tanks, the total was 900l, so you should definitely be able to get enough for yours. I asked at the chemist & explained what I was using it for. They gave me a funny look then said O, ok. I don't understand why a vet wouldn't give it to you?

Vet 1) Said that they do not give scripts unless they have seen the patient... Vet 2) Said that Metro doesn't work and referred me to a friend who used to keep Discus.

You don't say what you are using it for or how you are dosing. I did 2 doses 3 days apart at 7mg/l. If you dose twice at 7mg/l for 1000l with 400mg tablets you would need 35 tablets. I paid about R1 per tablet.

Yip, I dose 35 per dose, but getting the tabs is another issue. Clicks and Dischem don't give without script...

Also, be sure to ask for the generic, my local pharmacy charges R110 for 10! I get mine from a Vet friend - he gets the generic for in bottles of 1000.

And if they give you a funny look, Metronidazol is apparently used for the treatment of certain STDs - so you may get funny looks till you explain what it is for.

Discus have flagellates. 7mg/l is the magic number I believe.

There is also a way to soak food in metro, and I think this can be very effective as it goes directly into the intestine, but I don't know the dose.
Here's a link from one of Jenn's posts in a resent thread about flagellates in discus and angels by the prof.

Try a pharmacy too. Metronidazol is a human med and is used as an antibiotic for certain stomach problems. The liquid form is Flagyl, but it's a milky white colour that may discolour the tank water, hence why the tabs are recommended. I used 2 400mg tablets to treat a 100l tank, with the dosage based on 7mg per litre. Dosing was a bit out, but it worked well.

PS, the reason the vets/docs are so reluctant to give the meds, is that Metronidazol is a scheduled drug. It's a schedule 4 drug (same as meds such as Tramahexol, which is classed as an opium-like drug). By law, they may not give it to an animal or patient without seeing it first. Doing so and getting caught means big fines and other nasties for a practice.

Metro works really good. You can use the 7mg/l , but what i have done is i dissolved the right amount for my tank and then i soaked their food in that and then i added the mixture to the tank. Three days later i did a 50% water change and added another mixture again. And now, two weeks later, the little guy that were thin and did not want to pick up weight is a very healthy fat little puffer like a little fat puffer should be...

    HTH!!!!

Finally got the stuff. I am overseas so my wife, after getting tired of feeling like a druggy trying to convince chemists to give her schedule drugs without a perscription, started calling vets and found one who is willing to look at fish. He came to the house and gave the script. He said now he has seen the fish he will write a script without coming out next time. Anyway he is very happy with the set up (impressed with the continuous water change system and will be copying it for his 2.5m Angel tank). So dosed yesterday and shut off the water change and will do a big one in three days and so on. Unfortunately it may be to late for one discus:( If he pulls through I will be surprised. But it has been a week and a half since he stopped looking good.
