    Hello peeps

    A quick update

I imported myself some Wild Caught Rams from Columbia. The idea is to try and breed them and then cross them into my own Ram lines. The Wild genes should do my own Ram lines some good as far as vigour and genetic diversity goes.

I would also like to try and develop 3 or 4 F-lines feom the wilds, and thereby breed some 'South African Blue Rams". No more German Blues then...

Ive now had 1 succesful spawn from 1 wild pair, and the 2nd pair has spawned twice, but for some odd reason they keep eatin the wrigglers.
The wild fish are quite a pleasure to keep and observe, as they offer some really interesting behaviour.
They not too bad to look at either.

they look good Marcos.. surprising to see that the wild female has such a full body. sometimes domestic females are so long and skinny.
i really like the shape of those wilds... good form.
    thanks for sharing.

She has an amazing shape and very nice colour. Unfortunately the colour is really only breeding dress, as on most other days she is quite dull and unimpressive.

I find all the wild females that I have (6 in total) have very good shape. Must be that the domestic breeders are doing bad selecting

    Hi Nico

I keep them in mostly tap water. The tds sits at approx 90ppm and they are happy.
For breeding I had to drop it a bit and I also add some catappa leaves to get it a bit dark and tannin stained.
But they do perfectly well in pretty standard tap water. Remarkably so

Hey Marco. Long time..hope you are keeping well.

The rams look amazing and I've silently been following.

With regards to the pair's eating the wrigglers could it not be due to the fact that there is no foliage in order to hide or for the fry to take cover? Just a thought that popped into my head.

    Hi Grant,
I am well thank you and you?

I nowadays use plant boxes in most of my breeding tanks. This helps as the pairs have more hiding places and the success rates have definitly increased I would say.
The 2nd wild pair I may have to split up though as they seem to get into a tussle post spawn, and I think this is where the problems arise.
    Time will tell
I forced paired both the wild pairs and maybe she is just not the 'Kate Beckinsale' he is holding out for

See pic for plant box. This is pair 1 with some fry

    Funny that you mention it
I landed 35 Wild Caught Atabapo Altums today
    See pics.

    But not for me.
    Maybe someday I will try.
But for now I have some things I still wish to achieve with Rams.
I have a few projects, Ram related which I am busy with.
Maybe someday I will dip into the Altum pool. Thats another story though[IMG][IMG]

    Hi @Porong
Its not so easy. They are generally not cheap which is the first stumbling block. Secondly, to find a supplier who can ship to SA, AND whom you can trust. Very difficult combination
When it comes to Altums I have very strict criteria before I would be willing to buy from an exporter
I would want to know when they were caught and how long tjey have been in QT
What they are eating, AND importantly, a video of them eating.
Wild Caught Altums are very very susceptible to bacterial.problems

As for Tankbred F1s - I would only buy from 1 breeder and that is the German breeder Simon Forkel. He does not export outside the EU so again, its a problem.

For the forseeable future I dont have a solution
Be careful though - very often in SA people are duped into buying "Altums", only to be badly disappointed.

Sorry I cant be of more help

    @Marco,

    Thanks for the updates.

    Those wild Rams are stunning.

How are you Dark Knights coming along?
I still think they would look good with a red eye.

    Those Altums look very nice.
A lot of Angels come with the "Altum" label, yet as you have mentioned it is difficult to come by the genuine species.

Lol tx you @Reedfish and @MariaS

This Reedfish with his red eyes

So to help him out - heres a photo of a Dark Knight up close. See the red eye....
Problem is that the black band that runs vertically through the eye is quite a bit wider in DK than Wild type Ram, and so the eye appears almost solid black.
Unless some or other mutation occurs which removes the black band from the eye (like the "Golden Gene" in Discus) I doubt I will have the stamina to get it right via line breeding.

When you set out to achieve things with a breeding programme, you do so very naively. I have all these aspirations and "wide-eye" dreams, but somewhere reality sets in, and you realise than you are not only limited by possible genes combinations, but also by heritable flaws and selection faults made due to inexperience. A lot goes missing in the process.

For now, I want proper shaped, solid black fish with a bright copper-red line on dorsal and anal fins. I dont know if I will still be doing this to take it any further, but thats what makes it exciting, other people can[IMG]

@Reedfish.... Marco will order some bright red lenses put them on a pair and ship them off to you:)

You are so right @Marco ...
Breeding no matter how experienced you are, is still a gamble... or lets say a combination of what we know and think will work or should work and the little genes are he dices which sometimes have a mind of their own and fall whichever way they want

Be it as it may, you have achieved miracles and Im sure you will continue to do so.

You are too kind Maria, thank you.
I have been very fortunate with the Rams, and they have rewarded me with a great adventure.
I never imagined it would become such a big thing.
