Wanted: Malaysian trumpet snails in CT

Does anyone know where I can get some of these in Cape Town? Have tried 3 stores in the Southern Suburbs and no luck.

Also, there was some discussion a while ago about wether they are legal or not. I cannot find a definitive answer on the web, so if anyone is sure they are not legal, please let me know.

 

I can't help with sourcing, although I can't imagine this species ever being rare among aquarists. Hopefully someone will answer soon.

I don't believe that it is illegal - it does not appear on the invasive species lists, and furthermore, is "native" and fairly widespread across southern Africa. Why I say "native" is because a species that is in all ways identical to aquarium Malaysian trumpet snails occurs across the country, and because it cannot be differentiated it is generally assumed to be the same species. I pulled a few from a local stream, and a few that I got from the pet store, and even under a microscope (with a key in hand) I couldn't find anything useful to tell them apart. Very unlikely to be an introduced species, as it has been known from our systems for a very long time, and other members of the genus occur in sub-Saharan Africa.
