i saw a 1.5m tank with 16 malawi's in it, it looked perfectly fine to me...granted they all weren't adult size, i would go for around 16, seems like a safe number, you could always add on later if you want...

Nice looking tank, like the wood in the tank. I can only see 1 little problem which I have in my tank aswell is that when your female fish start carrying it's going to be a mission to catch them because of all the rocks unless you take the rocks out of course. Lots of rocks always looks good in a malawi tank. Nice job.

here here, i believe the same, over the years I have successfully raised a number of fish in this manner, granted the numbers were not high, I would say about 10-15 being the highest and about 4-6 the lowest

I've adopted the same policy, leave them in and survival of the fittest. My tank has about 250kg of rock in it and it will be a mission to remove and put back. Got 2 females carring at the moment.

Hi Donovan, I have around 50 tanks at home with Malawi cichlids. Mostly wild caughts and F1's. Have been breeding with them now for about 5-6 years. The calculation, given by Dolphin, is a good indicator for thsoe starting out. I have just recently, past 4-6 months, come to realise that you need quite a number of males and females in order to reduce the aggression level. I have a 150x44x45cm tank, 280l, with quite a number of fish in it. I have 8 males and 10/12 females of the one specie in it and there is absolutely no aggression. Four of the larger males are always showing full colour with the others, slightly smaller, trying. Breding goes on without any problems. I always would put a male together with 2/3 females into a tank but have now changed my way of thinking. I have another smaller tank with fully grown Pse. sp Zebra Long pelvic"chesese" with 4-6 males and a number of females. No aggression in there.
I, personally, would put around 40-50 carefully selected fish into that tank. The big thing is you need to ensure adequate filtration. What is your pump rate for the sump filter and do you have any other internal filtration?

    Hi Scotty

Thnks for the info, i have a bio balls in my sump and 2 x small power heads in the tank just for some circulation. The pump in my sump does 3700l/h

The problem i think im going to have is getting the fish stores around cape town to separate the males and females correctly.

Guys, with some fish its impossible to sex without venting. In some species, males and females look exactly the same, even adults
