Wow, very difficult to ID using that pic. They show now distinctive marks or color

Not Malawis - those are Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus. Also blacklisted, get fairly large and breed like rabbits.

Haven't seen a yellow O.mossambicus before, but I know they have bred a reddish colour morph to make the fish more appealing in the market by looking more like a sea fish, like the Red roman.

They will eventually look like this. These are two big males I speared out I January this year.

Those are big boy's Shakes, what did they weigh?
Sadly our indigenious wild populations are being genetically eradicated due to the spreading distribution of exotic nile tilapia which inbreed with the Mozambique tilapia/Blou kurpers.

Tilapia are also decimating the natural Cichlid populations in Lake Victoria where they have been introduced.

Hehe I bet that is why they are not yet very popular in S.A. The only fw fish that people will regularly eat and use are trout.
Tilapia are mass produced in more rural parts of Africa and also the U.S. If the yanks are willing to eat them then they probably don't taste too bad.
