Hey guys, after a few years keeping rams I'm slowly starting to give up :( my lfs just doesn't stock good quality rams anymore and they're getting rather pricey for a fish that doesn't last the week.

I've been looking at ideas of other fairly small colourful fish. I really like the apistos and they'd do well in my tank, though I find killis to be quite fascinating too. I think it's cool that you can buy the eggs and then watch them hatch and grow :) my lfs however sells neither, so I came here wondering if anyone sells apistos or killifish or the eggs? I stay in Stellenbosch but shipping could be arranged for eggs. Please let me know if you or any one you know of sells these? Or if it's possible to import the eggs from overseas legally? Thanks!

It's a pity about the rams, but I hear what you're saying. Some species coming through these days just aren't the quality they used to be, for a number of reasons.

If you don't want to entirely give up on the rams, check if @Marco has been distributing his strains to Cape Town stores. If so, they're great quality and aren't quite so prone to the failing of other common strains - I met a few of his fish recently. The owner was very happy.

Otherwise look out for the other ram species - the so-called Bolivian Ram, Mikrogeophagus altispinosus. They pop up on the wholesale lists sometimes. They don't have the bred-in colours like the other guys, but they have a natural beauty about them that is very appealing. Last I checked moderately tough too.

Otherwise good luck with finding apistos and killis.

As @SalmonAfrica says, try @Marco for some decent Rams.
Bolivian Rams are supposed to be hardier.

I have kept Golden Panchax in the past. They get to a decent size and are not too difficult to maintain.
My lfs does get some of the more obscure species. But have never attempted them.

If you're willing to take the drive, Aquatic Warehouse in the southern suburbs (Southfield) had a good apisto selection a few weeks ago.

    Hi

    Thanks for the mention chaps.

I do not supply Rams to any shops in CT. Only because I have not been contacted by any of them, and I havent been down there to go see any.

I can send you some Rams if you want. If you are keen you are welcome to send me a PM. I can assure you that if my Rams die by you, you killed them . They are tough and totally free from the nonsense that cause such high mortality rates in imported Rams.

    Regards

    Marco

I can 100% vouch for this. You wont find better (or prettier) Rams in SA, guaranteed.
