Just curios but don't shells of sea snails contains iodine? Which would be toxic to freshwater fish if I'm correct?

They shouldn't. Most shells you'll collect are from molluscs - and are made primarily of calcium carbonate (and a bit of organic matter, negligible). A good rinse with fresh water should get rid of any salts in/on the shells.

LOL - I'll remember that next time I go to the seaside. Should I make a citizen's arrest of all those little kids collecting shells? :D

Nice way to resurrect a really old topic, but I was looking for shells a while ago and came across this: 'web address removed' Frikken rip off now... I remember them being about R200.

lol @Jenn. i have to say though i have noticed a decline in the shells at our holiday home, im more interested in the shards of pottery and agate from a shipwreck a couple centuries ago and theres still pieces of pottery and bits of agate washing up. it blows my mind and its become abit of a tradition to go down at least once a holiday and see what i can find. who knows in another 10 years i might be able to put a whole plate together. what about lifestyle shops? would the shells they sell there be safe? otherwise you could try like crystal shops and wholistic healers, dont know of any but they might have.

Isn't it fascinating? Apparently it's from the Chinese merchant ships that used to sail around the Cape.
