Hi, tragic month for me. Apart from writing my Grade 11 exams, my Betta died last month. Really heartbroken after losing one of the fish I started the hobby with and handfed for nearly two and a half years.
I've been looking for a new betta though since their such entertaining fish to watch, but the stores I visited are pricing a "exotic" one for R350-500. Is this the going range for more desirable bettas? I've been looking for Koi (Plakat) Bettas specifically (I love Koi), but can't find (or know of stores) in Cape Town/Bellville area that sell them. If anyone knows of a store or breeder that sells them in Cape Town I would appreciate it; I'm not picky about whether it's male or female, but I don't have huge budget as I earn minimal pocket money. That is why I did not look at shipping a fish because it is expensive to ship (for me atleast) and my heart can't handle it dying in transit.
If anyone has suggestions for another type/colour Betta, I'm open to new things.
If anyone also knows of a Amano shrimp seller let me know. The Panorama shop still tells me it's illegal to sell shrimp and Pet World N1 City has told me that it's "coming" for nearly 7 months... Those are the nearest shops that I usually visit to stock up on supplies.

Amanos are expensive because they are so difficult to breed. You’re going to struggle to find them locally (in Cape Town).

Re the betas - perhaps phone Aquatic warehouse in Plumstead and ask them to send you pics of their current stock? They had a few nice ones when I was there last and I also love it that they keep their betas in proper tanks, not cups / vases.

Am sure others will chime in also.
