    hi everyone

I am so excited cause my new discus are home!!!
I got them yesterday and will only be switching the lights on when I get home from work.
I have spent so much effort preparing the tank, since May!
So you can imagine how chuffed I am!!!

I took this pic yesterday morning (with my cell phone) before collecting them..

    Hallo,

It looks like slate rock you have on the right side of the tank. How did you prepare it before putting it in your tank? Was it the just boil and scrub or did you use something els to clean?

    Thanks

I have had that piece of slate for many many years so just a good scrub, initially I pored boiling water over it. and also just a scrub.

I would not worry about going overboard cleaning slate too much, if the piece has a clean break on it, it should be safe after a brush!

The fibreglass background gave me many sleepless nights prior to taking a chance with it.... would def recommend that it is very safe, I even cut about 5cm off the top to wedge it in, plus broke off both braces to get the thing in.

    hi
    thanks for all the compliments!

It seems as though I have got a mixture, still waiting for the colours to come out.

some red turquoise, blue turquoise and seems as though I am lucky enough to be the proud owner of a pigeon blood.

The lighting is just 6 T8 flourescents, which include white, blue red spectrums.

This is the firts planted tank I have done, so I was not very adventurous regarding plant choice:

micro swords, swords, anubia nana, giant anubia, java fern and java moss.

Am looking to grow a glossostigma carpet though, so if anyone knows where I can source, now is the time to shout.

pics are coming on the morrow!

    oh and valli

here are the pics I mangaged this morning, still need to figure camera settings though!

Notice the 100l drum with prepared water for changes..

I could not believe the amount of ammonia in our tapwater!

Obviously they still have to become more colourfull, but feel free to let me know what strains you think they are, cheers!

A dumn question - How do you get rid of the amonia in the tap water?
Nice setup, I can't decide which furniture to throw out to get another tank with Discus. This will be the 5th tank in my house....

ammonia in tap water? really?...Did you add dechlorinator to it and if so then did you do the test before or after adding the dechlorinator? reason being in that as well as chlorine in our water there is also some chloroamine. When the chloroamine is dechloritated it basically leaves ammonia behind...

The Discus look a little scrawny, I'd feed them a minimum of twice a day. Feed them protein rich foods like Baby Brine shrimp, Hikari discus food, bloodworms and whatever else you find rich in protein!!

The tank is looking good dude! Well done.

I was referring to Spock's statement "I could not believe the amount of ammonia in our tapwater!"
I do not have that problem.

    Hi Spock,

I share Slagter's concern about your fishes, they look seriously emaciated and need a LOT of food or else they are just going to cause you endless grief. I am concerned about the size of the eyes relative to the body size, they look as though they may be stunted. Where do these fishes come from and what are you feeding them? I would think that they need feeding far more than twice per day more like 6-8 times per day to get them into any sort of shape. If you need advice about feeding consult my feeding thread and if I can help you, please shout!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Hi Spock Rider! Your tank is looking good! Don't know much about Discus, so can't comment on the condition/strains. But the tank is looking good. Have you managed to play with your camera settings yet? Any updated shots?

    hey thanks for the concern

the pics were taken on the morning after I got them.

    have been feeding them 3-4 times a day on the following;

frozen artemia, bloodworm, cichlid mix, pacific krill, spirulina, tetra prima

will post some pics soon and you can tell me what you think.

PS I was also concerned about eye size.

Please I encourage your opinion as this is my virgin discus experience.

they were brought in from Israel!

its been over a week now
