lone apple snail laid eggs

hey guys my snail, who i thought was a male by the way, has laid eggs last night :bigsmile:. now i would like to know if the eggs would be fertile if shes the only snail i got? the egss are white and opaque. anyone know

 

Snails are hermaphrodites!

 

so iv heard of terrestrial snails i wasnt sure if it was true for aquatic snails. though the net iv read that the eggs should be a reddish pink colour which mine are not. anyone else have apples that bred?

my snails eggs also went white before they hatched so I would keep an eye on them if I were you I think it is about 5 days or so then you are going to have a few hundrad snails in the tank...lol

 

Ok... naming your fish is pushing the limit... but naming a snale????? SLOJO????

 

The egg case will go to a darker color then the small snails will start hatching and falling in the water, the fish will eat them so put a floating breeding tank under them so the fish don't get to the them best of luck.

 

Go to aqualandpetsplus.com they tell you everything about apple snails. The eggs take two to three weeks to hatch. As far as i know you do need two snails even though they are hemaphrodites they cannot fertilize themselves.

Apple snails is male or female. If it's female and she was with a male in a previous tank she can carry the sperm for I think 6 months and fertilize her own eggs.

So chances are that you might still get little ones from the pod. Just take care that it does not fall in the water and stay humid in the canopy.

It takes about 2 weeks for them to start appearing.

 

As far as I know the apple snails do lay white eggs, not pink ones. Let us know if you get babies!

 

what wrong wit naming a snail zoom lol mines named doc lol. should i move the eggs to my heated tank? the tank they in is my guppy fry tank (cold water) so i dont think anyone is big enough to eat the babies. im looking forward to the eggs hatching if they do ill keep you all updated the pod has turned a slightly pink colour

Yes you should move the eggs to the heated tank, make sure that they are above the water but stay humid. What i did with my mistery snails is covered all the openings in the lid. When they hatch out they are about the size of a pin head. They say that it's not good to keep the adult snails in the same tank with the babies 'cos they climb into the adult snails shell.
Also i would move the adult snail to a heated tank in the winter, my first mistery snails died in a unheated tank.

awhile ago hey nearly a year can they store sperm that long? nope shes always been my only apple. alot of fun to watch though oh n iv got a polystyrene tray for the egg pod, i made wire hooks for it but maybe ill just leave it to float

My apple snail has laid the 12th set of Fertile eggs (light pinkish, with just 1 or 2 infertile white ones).. No male, its just 1 snail in tank.

They do store the sperm. I let one batch hatch -- got 80 babies.. I left them in the main tank (3ft), and they've culled themselves (or rather the fish have had dinner at their expense!). Got about 15 left that have grown to a decent size.

I love the snails, but honestly the egg laying twice a week is quite gross. Having to pick the eggs off the tank and dump them (NEVER in a river etc. they must basically die because snails that are this large can probably cause Lots of ecological damage.)

Once the babies are ready to hatch (two weeks in my experience), you will notice some cracked shells. I just crack the shells open, and drop them into the water. This prevents deaths if the shell is too try or the baby is too weak to break the shell. So I got about 80 babies with this method.

I think if you put the eggs under water, they basically drown.

IMHO you can name them lol they def have a personality.

**cracked shells refers to the EGG SHELL and not the shell on the body of the snail. (LOL).
