    Hi all

    Of course this breeding project went into overdrive when I don't have access to half the things I need, but it's had a good turnout so far. These are my Nimbochromis polystigma, which apparently go by hyena cichlid, sometimes mislabeled as N. livingstonii. Neither seem as popular as Nimbochromis venestus, but males take on a nice colour when breeding.

    I'm going to quickly run out of space as these guys grow up, but I'll cross that bridge when it get to it.

    Adults are usually bold, except when the camera is out. Here's dad, the dominant male:

    And the kids, who I've given up counting after the third batch:

    @SalmonAfrica

    Very nice.

    Are these the ones that feed primarily on the fry of Mbuna?
    Might explain the unfortunate name

    Thanks guys!

    The whole genus are collectively known as "sleepers", using their brown blotched appearance to look like a corpse, and then lie on the substrate. They'll snap up any curious fish that picks at the "corpse", and going by their mouth size could be anything from fry to juvenile fish. Although in aquariums they are happy to feed from the water column.

    There is a fantastic display featuring Nimbochromis at the Barcelona aquarium.

    Those are some gorgeous coloured males. My dominant male has put on a good display once or twice, but normally it's as you see in the picture above.

    I considered getting the same species in your pic @Reedfish , Nimbochromis venestus, but there wasn't any in stock. Including the species in this post, I've now kept 3 species of Nimbochromis, and although I don't think I'll be attempting another species anytime soon, I might well be tempted to try N. linnii (pic sourced online). Look at that mouth!
