Hi, any ideas for planting using grocery store necessities?
I've seen mentions of watercress and mint. Any others?
Also, how to work with them?

Do I just float the watercress pieces and let them be? Do I need potted mint?

My GF is growing the easy stuff like celery, sprouts and has now dumped a bunch of random seeds into my 11l experimental dry-start cube.
I filled it with an inch or so of Michelles Sphagnum Peat Moss, capped it with mixed medium & fine gravel and planted a few stems as well as some hydrocotyle tripartita.
Watered it a bit until some puddles had formed on the surface, covered with cling-wrap and in only 3 days I've seen pretty amazing growth.
I leave it in a spot with good sun for much of the day and it seems self sustaining, with no misting needed so far, the condensation drops and water retention of the peat moss doing enough.

No idea what seeds she's put into it but I guess I'll know soon. One of my 37l/ 10 USg tanks suddenly sprung a leak in the middle of the night, at about the 2/3rd water level mark (JUST as I'd more or less finished a hardscape in another identical tank that was intended to go in it's place- weird).
So, that tank with a small leak will now be turned into a larger propagation station.

Not really suitable for scaping but if your goal is to reduce nitrates:
    - I’ve used Watercress from a supermarket packet successfully in the pond. Just let it float, works well - develops roots and new leaves. But you won’t be able to actually plant it in the substrate, it needs exposure to air. And also relatively cool and clean water.
    - same with mint. Doesn’t have to be potted, stalks or garden trimmings will form roots. Prop it up in a corner (with leaves out of the water), or grow out of a HOB
    - you could try the sweet potato trick (search on YouTube)

Other things from the garden generally work better in a palludarium setup, above water. But perhaps you’re lucky

Gonna try the sweet potato. Some DIY needed to keep it out of water.
