    hey all.

Our offices are in abandoned quarry which has subsequently filled up with water. By all accounts they have been like this for over 20 years.

I have spotted quite a few larger fish and today saw what I think is a Banded Jewelfish.

Anyone on here have any idea if this is possible ?

Im in the greater Durban area.

The image was found online, very apparent red belly, stripes and dark fins.

Will have a look this evening.

@Reedfish, thanks mate. Its an odd one. The fish isn't native but it is so striking I cant imagine ive got it mixed up with a Tilapia or similar...

My guess would be Tilapia rendalli.
Is there any way you can catch one and post a pic?

Hey @fishcrazy, that's the species I initially thought it was, the Jewelfish. Tricky one though because while it looks very much like that species, the Tilapia seems more likely.... I have no idea.

    Let's just get this straight...
The fish in the picture he posted are Hemichromis fasciatus.
But i doubt that the fish he saw in the dam are, since it's very out of it's natural range and T.rendalli is known to occur in that area.
If the fish in the dam are Hemichromis, this would mean we have another, new alien intruder....which i think is very unlikely.

    Ah, yes.
Having re-read the original post. The photo is not of the actual fish in question
