    Hey...

I got some fruit flies today and was wondering if it would work if i fed some of my fish with these little guys???

I am also asking since i know how to breed them and it is very cost effective and easy to do so... If you would like to know how to breed them just ask...

    We are asking!
Can you perhaps help with the wing-less verity?

Wingless variety is dificult to get hold of... But it works the same as the normal Drosophilla breeding...

This is how you do it:
    1. You take your fruit flies and put them in a container through which you can see.(to make it easier to catch them when its feeding time for your other pets)
    2. Then you put in a saturated piece of cotton wool inside a petri dish or shallow bowl. (THERE MAY BE NO PUDDLES!!! As fruit flies are stupid and will easily drown themselves...)
    3. You put a bucket in with instant mash. This is a very good medium for them to lay eggs in and also for the little maggots to eat.
    4. leave them to mate and multiply.

PS: a fly can start mating 2 days after emergence. (I am not sure how long it takes the female to lay eggs but i will ask my prof on Monday and tell you then) :-D

    HOH...

    It works like this:

You get 2 pipes that fit tightly into one another, then you take a piece of mesh and put in onto the end of the thinner pipe and push the end with the mesh into the thicker pipe... (The mesh is so that you don't end up with flies in your lungs)

To use it you suck on the thin end of the Pooter and aim the thick end at a fly. This will suck the fly into the pipe and the mesh will keep it there. If you want i out again just blow on into the thin pipe and it will shoot out like a rocket/fly...

This will work for any insect... But if it is to big it won't fit into you pipe and you will have problems... Solution: Make a bigger Pooter or just catch it with your hand if it is that big...

    Hope this helps...

    Ok Let me try again:

    1. Get 2 pipes of different thickness (one that fits into the other) and a piece of mesh.
    DPP_0003.jpg

    2. Place the piece of mesh over the thinner pipe.
    DPP_0002.jpg

4.Press the thicker pipe over the thinner pipe with the mesh over it.

    5. The final construction.

    Simple and yet effective...

    Is the pictures good enough???

    Hope this helps...

@Jenn That is a brilliant idea... But the only problem is that flies that come from there have the possibility of carrying nasty diseases that could infect/kill your fish... But that is essentially where ALL of the colonies we have now came from... So getting a starter colony from there is perfect... ;-)

And i forgot the all important piece of mesh just now... OOOPS!!! at least i know that my flies are disease free... And being the entomologist i am i don't really have a problem with accidentally eating a fly with my pooter that were actually just a piece of pipe... ;-)
