Wow, this could be an informative thread....that's if someone doesn't stuff it all up.

Mysids? This is a first for me. How big are they? Where do they come from? How does one grow them?

    Regards

    TM

Wow... when someone say's they've been there and done that, you can realy say that you've been there and done that! :D

I'm also curious as to why the water is yellow... I've done the whole brine shrimp thing before, but my water was, for want of a better phrase, 'water coloured'. :)

One more Q: which two would you describe as being the easiest to grow and keep?

Very Important question.Judging by the amount of mysids....I'm guessing that they are?

Also wanted to know if these types of live food suitable for freshwater fish?

    Regards

Hi Vis, Tankmaster, Peter and Salmon.

That yellow water you saw was a % solution of a type of phytoplankton commonly found in the ocean Nannochloropsis Oculata, which the brine shrimp feed on from their hatching stage to adulthood. you can try feeding them activated yeast instead of the phyto, but insure you undertake more water changes when doing so as yeast can foul water up faster.

Mysids, as the brine shrimp (artemia) are extremely awesome little crustaceans. I found every specimen in this culture while diving the coasts of cape town. they swarm at certain times of the year, and all I did was swim through the swarms while diving with a large net, think of a butterfly catcher underwater and that was me! they will eat just about and solid particle floating through the water column, I fed those guys mainly on flake food and chopped up muscle's. Cannabilistic creatures tho, and I did not really attempt to create a sustainable culture.

The easiest to grow and keep would definately be the Artemia as they can handle larger water quality variation and can be cultivated from cyst with ease.

Ill show you guys my tank and daphnia pics soon as I get my hands on a camera.

    Regards
    Amphi
