I'm using LED downlighters on my Fluval. Not sure about the strip lights, but don't expect them to be any better than CFL's and they are considerably more expensive. They also draw less power and last longer

Only guys I have found whose LED's are worth the money you pay for them - both in correct colour spectrum/penetration and in longevity is ecoxotic - USA based company.... But in a few years time,LED's will be what we all use to light our aquariums - the technology is catching up fast...

If you want to go this route, look at getting units that is rated for 50 000 hours light, not the standard 10 000 hours...

@Franna - yes,the LED's themselves are cheap, but figure in about another R100 for the transformer....

I've been using SMD5050 6500K lights on my nano for a long time now and they work pretty well. I've only got 6 emitters over a 12" tank, so 96 lumen, but I get growth out of Flame moss, Java Fern, and Bacopa. I'm planning on quadrupling the amount of light though because it's definitely not enough. And I'm using a standard 2-pin transformer as a power source.

I've got 5 of these in the hood of my 3ft tank and they've got a nice white light and if you buy more than one module they're already wired together about 10cm apart. They're much more waterproof than the flexible strips.
