Hi. I'm looking at some solutions for my tank lighting and found some nice waterproof LED flood lights. They are rated at 20w, 1600 lumens and 6500k. I was thinking 4 over the length of my 2m tank. The tank is 60 deep and I will be doing some low tech plants in the future. So my question is have anybody done this and will it work for plants and also will it maybe be too yellow?
Ps. The units are R270 each.

    Cheers.

Nope. Found them on gumtree its a place in Cape Town. But give me a minute. Will sort that now. Ellies also make the exact same ones but at twice the price.

I think it could work but I am no lighting expert. You have a goof K rating, lumens is good.

    led floods, not all equal

    @a3aan
I see many cheap units popping up for sale, in general, VARIOUS combos OF COMPONENTS.
Not all of these components are what we would expect or want for our aquaria...
Better power supply, better heatsink design, naturally better LED chip are what we want.

    Outwardly they all look identical
They ARE GREAT for outdoor illumination.
 I even have some INSIDE

Surely, you'd like to know what kind of light, and quality you're getting for your plants and for aesthetics
    ...unless it's a cheap experiment:cheesy:

    They omit a few things:
Any ideas on LED Chip brand, ratings?
    Brand of Driver, power supply?
    No mention of spectral qualities?

I have obtained a few different LED Floodlights between 10-100W, of several colour and spectrum varieties
Although I specified chip, driver, lens combinations then these were assembled for me....for future projects
The factory has tested, and , grown plants and some coral under them.

Colour ratings, are not often as product label describes., nor as often expected.
You could have WHITER, or YELLOWER and still be listed as 6000-6500K

If it doesn't pan out for you, there's still the other applications:bigsmile:

I figure you can grow your low light plants under these . Overall, I'd say give it a go.

Thanks so much for the response. I hear what you are saying. So its a bit of a gamble. I had the Ellies product in my hand and switched on. And I must say I think it looked pretty well constructed and the light was deff to the eye at least very good. But they cost over R500.

So if all components are assumed good then the concept will work? The number of units and the lumens and so on?

Sorry forgot to mention. The ellies one is the same spec on the box at least.

@Altum thank so much again for the detailed reply. I think one sometime forget that price is not the only consideration when buying a product.
    Cheers.

My Pleasure, if I could help.
Note , it's NOT the outer, visible components ,nor build.- it's the critical working parts - that's the issue
Pester suppliers for that info and I can help you further.

You will find places like Ellies, distribute into the trade, an item that was bulk imported , boxed/labelled and supplied to them, by another mass importer.

Even the worst or best units, still LOOK the same, even initially seem to perform similarly.
Original apllication, and intended use is not affected at all,

Guarantees, also help, there is a minimum 1 , ideally 2 year, or even better 3 year quality guarantee, in some case

Again, none of these help in the aquarium suitability.:weird: For that chse up the questions in post #7
    a
Pity, you're not in CT you could then SEE these differences personally.

Sorry for going off topic here, but I always laugh at these claims on LED boxes. "Guaranteed for 20 years..." Please, the LED technology hasn't even been around for that long. The funniest I saw the other day was a no-name-brand globe that my lighting specialist showed me... "Tested and approved to work for 35 years!"

Hehe... I hear you. The other one that always make me laugh is the new and improved one. It can't be new and improved at the same time....

Well I ordered just one for a test. (Actually just made payment now.) But will post the results on this thread. Fingers crossed.....

So I got my test unit this morning. And I must say I am very impressed with it. Light does not have a yellow shine at all. And very good penetration. Considering I paid R270 for it. Will see if its worth it in the long run.

Ps: will post pics a bit later today.
