Yip thats what they are, they allow gasses to pass thru but not water. Never seen them in SA. They can be bought on EBAY for about 20US for 80 odd bags.

I have some and I have used some, very useful if you want to bring contraband into the country. They tend to be smaller bags because you can put fish into them without any air. They are very handy for transporting fish in your luggage because they allow air to move directly from the atmosphere into the bag. Another major advantage is that because there is no air in the bag, the water does not move around if you move the bag sharply, so this is much better for the fish.

It is actually interesting to note that these bags are the result of the Russian space effort. They developed plastic layers so that they could remove CO2 from the air that the astronauts breathed. After the collapse of the USSR the persons who developed the plastics moved to the USA where they patented the process and now you can buy the bags for your fishes.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

They use a laser perforator to make these bags.
you can set the size of the hole to let air in and out but not water.

most of the fresh veg from Wollies is packed using this technology.
    It's amazing technology

You must just remember that if you transport fishes in these bags, which are then filled to the top with water because the bags do the breathing, you need to leave spaces between the bags which must then be filled with highly porous substances such as polystyrene chips or for that matter clothing which will allow the oxygen to move through these substances and into the bags. Under no circumstances can one pack the bags on top of each another because then the oxygen cannot get into them.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
