    Hey guys

Just finished speaking to my father about building a koi pond.

We will only start building in May or June, need to get as much info as possible.
So to all the people you have built koi ponds please could you give me some tips.

Size will depend on space. There will be a waterfall going back into the pond....Umm ja will have to be a net as i have hungry cats and a STUPID dog.

Will post a pic tomorrow where it will be and as it progresses.

    Cheers

Why koi ? Go with goldfish (only place they will ever be happy is in a pond). Got my original goldfish in a pond outside - comet is probably 20 cm, fan-tail and orlando all doing good in JHB winters. I hear koi need hectic filtration - good luck with the project.

I think you need a bio filter box. But different fish is still an option. But the building will happen

No... standard swimming pool in JHB upmarket pool area is a 3m x 4m pool... 1m deep at shallow end, 1.6-1.8m in the deep end. Retails around R75,000.00 for marbelited pool of this size

    We quoted a school to build a 25m x 12.5 average depth 1.6 (500 000l) for R240 000.00 ......:hmmmm2:

Because I am a Project Manager for a construction company. If Penguin Pools are ripping us off, (in your opinion), I would be more than happy to take my business somewhere else. (Every house we build get's a pool)

If u build swimming pools for a living surely you can build a pond without asking here, in fact u should have all the answers.

if you put a swimming pool sand filter on a koipond you will have serious issues - the filters look the same but the design isnt

I work in the shop! I dont do outworks. So you tell me how should one do something without knowing how or done it before?

Not sure what you are trying to say....who mentioned anything about using a pool filter?

Well in that case i would recommend you ask the people that work with you for some pointers, do u manufacture gunite pools as well as fibre glass ones?

Best (IMO!!!) would be to build a concrete sump for a pond, sump will obviously be above the water level and water will be pumped up from the pond and gravity fed back to pond.

So what sort of filter are you planning on using? Let me give you a run down of my filter on my pond....

bottom drain drains into a 3mx1mx1xm settlement chaimber. from there the pump picks it up, into a 3 bag koi pond gravel filter. there it splits into two bio filters (110mm pipes filled with bioballs) one pipe goes into another 25L biofilter and 1x55watt UV and then into the planter, the other pipe goes into a 30watt UV and into the pond via a venturi.

I hope this clears things up a little
