It could also be a fish tapping something against the glass. We had an angel fish that loved tapping the thermometer against the glass.
It's definitely the Pakistani Loaches. Mine used to do exactly the same thing. I don't know how they do it, or why they do it, but mine used to do it in my lounge tank. I wouldn't worry too much.
My money is on the yoyo loach, mine use to make that kind of the sound while he was chasing the other fish.
It's the loaches. Most loach species do it. They have barbs hidden under their skin that they use to protect themselves and they can also be used to make a clicking noise. Loaches have been known to do this during feeding at night. I've heard mine do it.
Loaches make this sound close to a snail, to stunn it, in order to keep the "lid" open, before they eat it! I've seen this happen to a "stray" large apple snail! They also use the sound to communicate and when they are excited! They also do this at feeding time with live bloodworm! A few loaches could keep you up, if the tank is in your room, or if there is a eco in the room, where the tank is situated.
