So, finally I have started setting up my tank which I got a month ago aleady. Hubby has been at me to get moving. He doesn't realise that these things take time and planning... Serious consideration is taken as too what substrate to use, getting the right rocks and wood... Must admit he carried a bag of sandstone on Saturday for about 1 km for me on the beach. Thanks to @WillemNicolaas for the driftwood, which looks amazing. and to Bryan at @JungleAquatics for the substrate.:star:

so here are the pics for the start of the setup. Will post as we go along. Anyone have any ideas on how to do the landscraping? Was also thinking of putting the log in the middle then with the sandstone around it.

Hi @Pauline. No plants as yet. Malawis snack on them too much, they will get the odd brussel spout on occassions to satisfy their lust for green stuff.

Plants seem to be working in @scotty tank so might just add a bit in for some colour at a later stage and hopefully they wont eat it all up

p.s following your new tank as well. wow 2 new tanks on TASA with wood donated by @WillemNicolaas. This is awesome.

@kitkat - Looking good. Really nice piece of wood you got. Is your background painted or stuck on?

@kitkat, i like how this tank looks and the scape is nice i think for malawis, the only thing that i think you may want to address is the amount of substrate, i see its not layered too thickly, and in my experience malawis will dig a lot, and you might end up with patches where you are seeing the bare bottom tank, now there is nothing wrong with this except that it might become a bit of an eyesore, so i would suggest adding more substrate.

Ditto. Best underwater miners !!! pity they cant walk... LOL

My substrate is about 6cm thick, when they reach the bottom it caves in a bit. the bottom is never exposed.

yep, when we kept them, the subtrate was 6-8cm deep. no matter how much you would flatten the subtrate, they would rescape overnight lol
