OK so I when and got myself some brime shrimp at a LFS in JHB but I have to know a few things like:
    1. do the live in salt water or normal water?
    2. If the live in Salt water, how do I mix it for them ( 1lt of water to ? aquarium salt)
    3. what do you feed them?
    4. how hard is it to breed them?
hope I can get some answers to my questions :blink1:

Gareth, as far as I know brine shrimp is normally used as a food for fish.
You buy the eggs, hatch them out, then feed the hatched shrimp to your fish. End of story.
I am not sure how the breeding of them works.

As far as I know, they are most nutritious when they are first hatched. I don't know how good they are after that.

    Hi Gareth, (good name BTW)

Brine Shrimp (Artemia) are definately most nutricious when small, but they are still the most nutricious food source for fish when they are big too! They contain essential Amino acids which other foods just don't contain!! For that reason, they are most recommended to feed fry so that they get the best start they can!

Frozen 'BS' is also excellent for conditioning fish for breeding!!

So yes, BS babies are the most tasty, but the adults aren't bad either!!

As for the breeding part, I can't comment other than to say I have heard of people breeding them! How they do it, I'm not really sure??

    Cheers
    G!

    In a Nutshell:

1.) 4 Slightly Heaped teaspoons of salt to 1 Liter of water.
2.) Whatever container you use to keep/breed them in must be aerated as well as at the optimal temperatur.(25 c)
3.) Feed them small amounts of dried yeast(The ones that you buy from spar or PnP) 2 - 3 times a day.
Harvest small amounts every day and keep adding BS eggs until you have your colony settled.
4.) Bigger container = better colony + better harvesting.

The efford is growing out BS and keeping the SG right for them vs just buying frozen is simply not worth the drama

the reason why they are most nutritious when they are first hatched is because they still have their yolk sac. As they grow they consume it so the sooner you feed them to your fish the better.

I'm with Henk. Just buy the frozen stuff - your fish will appreciate it all the same. :)

Alternately you could by Decapsulated BS from Dolphin. They do not need to be hatched at all... just left to stand in water for a few minutes, then fed directly to the fry.

The energy the BS uses to break out it's egg is kept with the BS, as it is decapsulated for the them. They obviously don't grow, don't hatch... just fed a such. Been using on my angel fry for a week.. and I have seen very good results

Well, R15 for the eggs, then remember to add costs for the salt and the electricity for heating and aeration. Put on top of that the fact that not all the shrimp will survive. In the end, frozen works out cheaper.

How is the shrimps working out?
And , about the Decapsulated BS ,does that eggs look like an orange colour?
The petshop pwner said its an much better buy than the normal brime shrimp you have to hatch,
Anyway, also strugling to hatch my normal brime shrimp,or a whole bunch, the hatched eggs doesnt float
so they are all around the hatced shrimps, but hatching a few of them are much easier, would like to get them
a bit bigger since my guppies swims around them when i add them
