To be honest that's looking great! :)

I must try one of these dirted tanks someday, looks like they get results!

I like this! Good job man. Keep updating! Looking great. I also started a NPT those month, so mine is still fresh and in its infant stage. Very surprised at how quickly it stabilised.797a2cb0637d6f3f02400ca7b533096d.jpg

I have always been wary of putting potting soil into a tank - heard it can get messy and worried that one day I find all my fish dead. But looking at the tanks here I may give it a try in the distant future when I set up another tank. Its an option I am now considering

Can't remember the brand. Gromore or something. But it was just an organic potting soil from mica

Cool, I went with something different... Gave organic lawn dressing a go. Made me nervous because everyone uses putting soil but I wanted to see if the bit higher compost levels in it aid plants better maybe

@Camcam... You said you'd is about 5 months old, right. Are you still running a filter? If so, are you planning to reach a stage where you're ecosystem is more or less self sustained that you don't really need a filter, or do you not see that happening?

Well it's actually about 9 months give or take. The pump is purely just to provide some circulation. Ive removed the filter media. I test the water parameters once and a while and all checks out. So I'd say it's balanced for now. Bare in mind that The bioload on the system isn't very high. I've read that at about a year or so the conditions start to dive. Nutrients are used up etc. But I've also read of these tanks going for over 2 years. But I guess it's alot to do with maintenance and all that as well. Ive added some tissue culture crypts to the tank recently and only one melted. The rest are flourishing. All in all for a first time tank of this type and an experiment. I'd say that it works

That's great to hear. Because I also intend to remove the unsightly filter at some point.... But under a very close monitoring of parameters of course. This far in super surprised on the balance. How often do you do WC? Or do you just top up?

I'll probably do a quarter to a half WC, once every 2 weeks. I have a glass lid so there is very little evaporation over that period.
