I've got java fern thriving in my tank, the thing is i need to trim and replant them. Can i cut them at the rhizome and replant in other parts of the tank or will they die if the rhizome is cut?

As far as I know you can cut the rhizome with a sharp knife. As long as each section contains rhizome, a few leaves and a few roots, it won't even look back. If you happen to break a leaf off, just let it float around the tank and babies will form on it.

Seeing as I myself am a newbie concerning aquatic plants, I'd suggest waiting for someone to confirm this before taking it as gospel. :D

I've noticed that if you prune Java Fern and the 'stompie' floats around or have movement, it is not too eager to grow (happened to me).
But vee is right, just cut the rhizome and attach it to a piece of wood or rock and then have patience...it'll start sprouting eventually. Once I did this to my Java Fern, it started growing (even before I added the CO2 to my tank). If you are going to let it float on the water surface, it should be stationary. Think moss also is like this....doesn't like too much water movement

    LOL :)

If you happen to have CO2 (whether injection or liquid) getting into your tank, it'll grow faster

Baby steps with me Dale....I'm just getting used to the idea that I have to seriously LOOK AFTER my plants let alone start pumping the tank with CO2. (Not as much as I look after my fish though...) :D
