Hi guys a few of the leaves on my Java fern go this yellow colour and get brown spots on them. The main plant is also pictured. What do you think is wrong? Currently I have quite high light and co2 injection and I'm dosing with scape complete. [IMG][IMG]

The top leave might just be old?

Don’t know, I’ve kind of stopped thinking of java fern as an easy category plant. I’m getting pretty mediocre results with it where other, supposedly more demanding plants grow well. Granted, I do low tech. But isn’t it supposed to be a low tech plant?!?

If it's an old leaf, then i think those black spots are where it grows new plants from.

I've also struggled a lot with Java fern. I'm only just managing to get it to grow properly, and that's in a barebottom, no fertiliser, no CO2, medium light tank. Only extra nutrients are from a single betta.

They are also known to be potassium hogs, so you might need to increase the ferts

Ferts advice makes a lot of sense, but I’d rather phase the java fern out than mess with a fert regime that seems to work...
The trident fern in the 44L is doing well but I have the normal one, narrow leaf and windelov that are not blowing my socks off

Can you guys recommend a broad leaf epiphyte as an alternate? I quite like the old Java Fern.

Can’t think of a broad leaved one, perhaps one of the larger Anubias?

my favourite epiphyte is bolbitis heudelodti, it grows quite large but the leaves are fern-like

Bolbitis is awesome  for me it grows much better than Java fern, with fewer issues too
