I bought java ferns from a shop that had algae and snail problems, so when i got home i thought to do a small bleach bath predip before adding to my tank, but after putting them in the solution, i completely forgot about them and went on with my studies, about an hour later i remembered and was like "oh Shiatsu..." ran and took em out, rinced them off, put em in clean borehole water and added safe to counteract any traces of bleach (it was a very weak solution mind you)

So after a day in clean water, i tied them to driftwood and added to the tank, but the leaves are now slowly deteriorating and the rhizomes are the only nice green bits really left, except for small traces of green still visible in the leaves here and there

Should i leave it alone or trim all the leaves off at the rhizome, leaving me with just a rhizome..... (doesnt sound like a good plan does it?)

Included are pics of the ferns,

and second, the ferns to the left

(next to the bit of water lilly) you can see are nice and green (previously planted from a different batch-and-buy)

i would cut the dead leaves off , i think by leaving them in the bleach u killed all the plant cells , rather have the plant use what life it has left to grow new leaves and not waste energy on trying to repair the old ones. i could be completely wrong but its my 2cents worth . i have done this to a normal fern and it recovered ( not bleaching it but cutting all the leaves off)

alrighty, 2 votes to trim away, now just to confirm, should i completely trim away the leaf against the rhizome/1mm away whatever, or just cut half away from every leaf like you would do with a terrestrial plant cutting?

For Otos I'd try Exclusive Pets, they do their own importing so give them a call. 012 663 7469
Just bear in mind that Otos have a high first month mortality rate.

ah, thanks, though i lost two of my three purchased, one is surviving, and adapting nicely. i'm eyeing the other two at the LFS that i didn't buy, if they are still alive and well by next week, i'm taking them as well, hopefully i'll have three successes then. It seems the java ferns are slowly coming back, as currently all i have is sad, leafless rhizomes, i have seen 3 or 4 new leaves appear, yay

Problem is that tank has now gotten rid of green spot algae, but now i have hair algae seeming to have started from within my hairgrass clump ironically enough... I also saw one tiny smidge dot trace of bba, but thats gone now

Java fern usually, but not always, sheds it leaves when it is moved from one tank to another. Dead leaves to be removed completely from rhizome; rhizome to remain anchored on wood or rocks

    Cheers

Does Java fern need to be anchored? Because I got some last week and just stuck it in the sand

okay, now a new question, i was given some moss for my small planted tank, and forgot to treat it before adding it to the tank, and a week or so later i noticed weird hairy algae growing from some moss, longish tufts of darkish brown/green algae. i took out the infected piece of moss but it spread, i now have hair algae on almost all my broadleaf plants and its grown over the newly regrown javamoss i had going on my driftwood. anyone have a solution for me on how to remove the algae safely, i dont want to use anything that will harm my ottos, ive got three of them in the tank and their on their way to becoming healthy round fishies. ??
