I've never even seen a normal Jack Dempsey here, but those Electric Blue ones are fantastic!

Just feed them more frozen type foods - bloodworm and frozen shrimp should help a bit. It'll also help them put on some size and get them into breeding condition.

Electric blues, as far as I know, haven't hit South African shores yet. I think it's the price that puts wholesalers and pet stores off from bringing them in; it is a risk, after all.

Do you know any one that might import them? I heard there a genetically engineered fish does this mean that when you breed them they don't produce electric blue jacks?

Not that I've heard, but apparently there's some argument going on about the origins of this fish.

Like you said, some people think it's genetically engineered, other's believe it's just a selectively-bred variant of the regular Jack Dempsey, while other groups think it's either a geographical variant of the original species or a species in it's own right.

I think it is it's own species, therefore I believe that they'd produce young that are of the same colouration of the parents.

from the research i have done, everyone has said that the electric blue dempsey is just a genetic abnormallity that occurs. its like an albino dog or cat or lion or anything like that, they are not genetically modified by humans or anything like that. its just a variant.

    Got it: EBJD

Turns out, from research, it shows that is is just a colour morph of the orginal JD.

Yup, it's just a morph... Interestingly though, apparently if you breed 2 electric blues, you get normal JD fry... If you breed 1 electric blue with a normal, you get a 50/50 mix of normal and electric blue.

The problem with these guys, is that they are so expensive. I know Altum was looking at bringing them in, but they will be more expensive than Discus... It's rather mad. But on the flip side, can you imagine having a breeding setup of them? It would certainly be something to see...
