    Hello,

I've attached a photograph of one of my Dwarf Cichlids who has two white spots on his side. I'm pretty sure that it is ick, but I've never seen it with my own eyes before, so just want to make certain. I've raised the temperature of the tank to 32deg for the past two days, but the spots have not changed.

Thanks, Do you know what it could be? The fish does not seem to notice the spot on his side and is under no discomfort as far as I can see.

I agree that it is not Ich, I rather think this is a physical injury.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

@Dirk do you agree he must just add a bit of salt to the tank?

Yes, I think that would be good advice, but don't overdo it, remember rams require quite soft water.

i actually thought a tea bag or 2 will help for this maybe? and it will be better for the fish that likes softer water.. But salt will do the trick also remember aquarium salt not table salt hehe.

Thanks @Dirk, the spot looks like it's made up of smaller grainy looking pieces rather than one large spot and it's protruding from his body which makes me think that it's a growth. Should I slowly lower the temperature again, or leave it just to make sure?

In the tank I have Neon Tetras, corys, gouramis, a ancistrus and a loach. Will the salt be okay for them? I don't have a quarantine tank.

Firstly Ryno, he could add some salt and a teabag or two that won't do any harm.

Secondly Daniel, if it is a growth then you can do nothing about it in any case. I would advise that you lower the temp because 32 C is very hot and also causes a lot of stress and it serves no purpose at the moment. Drop it slowly to 28 C.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

The salt will be ok, but that high temp has just about cooked all those other fishes, particularly the neons as they do not want high temps (see my posts elsewhere about neons), the gourami and the loach would be ok, but all of the others are not happy, that's for sure!

Thank you all for the advice, the temp's going back down to 28 deg. Will get some salt this afternoon and hope that it does the trick.

I don't know what the two spots on the tail fin are. I'm very new to fish keeping, so I don't know when I should be concerned about spots. The clown loach is completely spot free, I've been watching him closely as I've heard that they're susceptible to ich. I took a closer inspection on all the fish last night and one of the tetras has a small white dot on his tail too, all other fish seem okay.

Salt does help but Im not sure if the plants in your tank will like the salt.
Try small daily water changes for the next week or so.
Keep a eye on the clowns.
They will confirm your suspicions if its ich or not.

Thank you everyone for the help. I treated with salt for a few days and did daily water changes. Yesterday the one spot had completely disappeared, so hoping the other will fall off in the next few days.
