    Hi all

Is there a recipe for raising Cory fry? - Mine keep dying. I keep getting lots of eggs from my Peppered cats and have been learning hard lesson in trying to get them to adulthood.

First lesson: how to "harvest eggs - after squishing many I now have the "art" down pat. A kebab stick and a medicine spoon underneath to catch the eggs if they fall.

Lesson two: feeding - I now have fine flakes and microworms. Not sure why all but one of the babies died

Lesson 3: New eggs all got fungus and perished - Now I put them in a dilute solution of Meth Blue - Seems to be working well - eggs started hatching today

Now I need help: I have read that Corys need to be in really shallow water for a few weeks to prevent drowning. Could this have caused all my previous deaths as I did feed them well and kept the water quality pristine. Also do they prefer some sand? what is a good feeding regimine? what is a good success rate (so far I have 1 x 4 week old from 12 eggs that hatched originally?

Advise would be welcome. I currently have 20 eggs and all seem to be growing healthily in my dilute meth Blue solution. (can I leave the fry in it for a few days once they hatch?)

    Regards
    Barry

    Hi Barry.

We used to breed cory doris many years ago and our setup was....
Breeding pairs were placed in a 2ft tank filled 1/2 way with rain water and black water extract. ph was between 5.8 and 6.5. temp range 26 C. to trigger the spawn i used to drop the temp to 24C in evening and raise it to 26 again early next day before sun rise. tank was bare with only a few rocks and plants in pots 2 x large airstones on very slow tricle bubble. after spawning i would remove the parents and try not to desturb or touch the eggs.
turn up the airstones slow to medium level to allow water to move arround i have found that this helps with fungus reduction. eggs should hatch between 4 to 5 days.
Turn down air volume to trickle and feed after yolk sacks are gone newly hatched brine shrimp. i used to add a squirt of infusoria for the 1st couple of days then only brineshrimp. Buy spinach clean and blend in a blender but not liquid roll out and freeze. Break small piece off and feed 2x per week and later fine flake foods.

    Hope this helps.
    Regards

    Hi,
Will only concentrate on the raising part as you don't seem to have issues with getting them to spawn.
I put the eggs in a small tank, about 5l or even less. This makes sure they find the food as opposed to get lost in a big tank.
Add a small air driven sponge filter, no substrate at all.
Brineshrimp is good (if you have) but I don't think it makes that much of a difference, have raised many cories without it as of late.
Infusoria helps initially (Liquifry No1), don't overuse.
Liquifry No3 is also good when they are really small but I found it fouls the water quite a bit.
I use Tetra Tabimin tablets which I grind to a fine powder in a coffee bean grinder.
A good success rate would be 50+ %
In small tanks like I use you need to do wc every second day.
A pipette is useful to remove perished fry and vrot eggs as well as left over food.

Once they have grown a bit I put them into a slightly bigger tank (still small tank, no substrate) and add a small hob with a sponge over its strainer so the fry is not sucked in. The hobs are filled with matrix.
And from here they move up to the next size tank (including substrate) and after that they get transferred into a 2, 3, or 4ft grow out tank.
    I hope this helps.

Thank you everyone. I am trying again using all your advise. Yes, I have no problem spawning :) . I have another 26 eggs growing and 3 babies of these hatched yesterday.
