    Hi All,

I was playing around with two setups the other day that I want to use as quarantine/breeder tanks and I found that I had great difficulty getting the water to the correct temps. The tanks are 6mm glass, styrofoam bottom, 50l, no hoods. I have a 50W heater in each - I bought cheap non-fancy brand name heaters...
It seemed that it would take ages and that I had to set my heaters to temperatures way higher than indicated to get to the appropriate water temperatures...

Is this normal? - My 4ft with 2X250W Eheim Jager heaters didn't have this problem at all - Im scared Ill cook my fish when summer starts again... Or that they will freeze in winter...

    Just over worked...compare your el-cheapo's...you used a 50W in a 50L, in your 4ft you used double (500W in less than 250L)

I double dose my wattage (i.e. 2W/L) and have lids for my tanks to help keep the heat inside. With that being said, you shouldn't really struggle with temps now, unless you aiming for high 20's or low 30's (my unheated tanks are between 22-24 at the moment)

As smurf man said, bit underpowered, combine two 50w in one tank, get a 100w for the other tank and you should be ok
