Definitely easier through a sponsor. I have imported show dogs on 3 occassions and if the paper work is not right then customs has the right to send them back or to euthanise. My one dog from Finland was almost sent back. Luckily they decided to rather quarantine him.

have all of your permits in order, importers code - which needs income tax numbers, vat number, clearing agent, health cert from the other country etc etc etc

most fish you buy from a whole sale company overseas you have to buy in box or half box - ie 2500 cardinals or 40 oscars etc at a time...

Get hold of the sponsors - Where are you situated?
Dolphin can help you in the Jhb area and further afield. He seems able to find any species of fish.
Check the sponsor pages for other sponsors that can also help you.

Dolphin in jhb frequently gets interesting stuff imported.
Altum does the same for CT.. altho I don't know if he imports as much of the wierd stuff as Dolphin does.

Dolphin will gladly ship fish anywhere in SA.
