Hi Guys, I bought around 10 Amano shrimp a few weeks ago and this past weekend I noticed that one of the females were carrying a MASSIVE clutch of eggs. So I did a bit of research into breeding Amano shrimp and basically it seems EXTREMELY difficult with very low success rates, however I've decided that I'm still going to give it a go, will be going to my local aquarium store tomorrow to get some marine water and will be preparing a small tank for the larvae and a small tank for the female as well. She is around 5 days berried and I understand that on the 2 week mark she needs to be moved into the small tank so that she can kick her eggs. I was just wondering if anyone has been crazy enough to attempt breeding them and if I could get some pointers, will also be updating my progress on this thread.20210729_185018.jpg 20210729_185049.jpg 20210729_185224.jpg

Tried it. Failed. Moved on haha.

I know @MadHatter is also trying to breed them at the moment.

Its a real struggle. Good luck with the breeding!

It really isn’t an easy task, I’ve invested more in to breeding Amano’s than I would like to admit .

Still have to raise a batch tho. Best so far is 26 days. Haven’t been able to pass that barrier yet.

You can check my thread “New Journey Begins” got some random lengthy updates on there.

I also gave it a try. Used ocean water. Got my zoe to 4 or 5 days before they all died. Haven't tried again

@MadHatter Thanks mate, I checked out your thread, it is very informative, 26 is very good from what I've researched, but yip, looks like a major mission especially trying to work a full time job with demanding hours but I'm not at all put off and if worst comes to worst and I loose them all, Ill try again and again and again........

Only way to do it best of luck mate.

Just check with the shop to which salinity they mix their water to, I buy from time to time as well but they only mix it to 25% so I still have to take it up to 35% after that.

@MadHatter Thanks for the heads up, is that the salinity percentage? I'm going to aim for around 35000 ppt, is that fine?

Ppt is 350 for 35% believe the SG is 1.027 (might be wrong on SG)

    Ppm is 350000

I’ve never used ppt, so you might be right but to my knowledge thats how I see it as stated above.

    Ppt - parts per thousand
    Ppm - parts per million

How will you measure the salinity? With a refractometer?

@MadHatter I'm thinking about using a Hydrometer as they are much cheaper, just worrying about the accuracy, what did you use?

I bought everything I needed as breeding them is a focus. Not just an experiment.

So I bought myself a refractometer. I do have a hydrometer, I should actually test how well they work. Or the one I have atleast

Ok so I've just come back from the aquarium store, the people there obviously don't know anything about Amano shrimp as the guy there was completely baffled when I asked him for some marine water for breeding Amano shrimp. He took me to his red cherries, grass shrimp ect and kept pointing to the babies in the tank and was like "LOOK NO SALT WATER" and kept arguing with me, eventually I was like "Just give me the damn water!":lol:Anyway I've set up 2 tiny tanks out of 2L bottles, I've decided to move all the Zoas between the 2 tanks once a week instead of doing water changes as I believe there is bacteria that grows at the bottom of the tank and will attack the zoas. I bought a floating hydrometer for 80 bucks and seems to be working well, it works on SG, and I bought a tiny light to try speed up the Algae growth in the tanks, I've currently got the tanks outside in the sun as well to try speed it up further. If I am successful, even if I only get one Amano from this whole exercise, ill invest further into getting proper tanks, a Refractometer ect.

Hi guys, first small update, I have set up a temporary tank for my Amano female, I've decided to go with 5L ice cream containers for the female and the upcoming Zoas as I quickly realized that the 2l bottles would be way too small to work with(for the Zoas). I've got a small 50 watt heater in It, a cheapo blue white light and a sponge filter. I've decided to move her over two days earlier as her behavior has changed a lot, she seems to be hiding a lot more, her eggs have also changed colour and are almost white, all I have to do now is try and catch her(still working on that), feel a bit bad about taking her out of her nice tank and moving her into a crappy container but at least its temporary. Have got the marine water and all the other equipment heaters, lights ect for the Zoa tank which ill set up tomorrow and will be buying the Phytoplankton tomorrow as well as @MadHatter advised (shout out to him as he has given me a lot of advice!). Will keep you guys posted!20210806_204023.jpg 20210806_203842.jpg

Just set that corner filter to low as they do suck them in or pull a stocking over it to cover the holes.

Also I have read that you shouldn’t exceed 20 amano zoa per L of water, apparently with the tests conducted it leads to a high mortality rate. I don’t know how true this is tho, haven’t tested it myself.

@MadHatter I don't think I can adjust the rate on my pump but I'll fit on one of those valves to adjust the flow rate, I've planned to set up 2 x 5L tanks for the zoas, I'm hoping it'll be enough.

So big news! My gut feel about the female was absolutely spot on!!!, have moved half the Zoas over to marine water, just waiting for the rest of the eggs to hatch, unfortunately I was somewhat unprepared and ended sucking the zoas up with an airtube, and moving them over like that. Still waiting for the rest of the eggs to hatch.Screenshot_20210807-081848_Gallery.jpg Screenshot_20210807-081844_Gallery.jpg Screenshot_20210807-081837_Gallery.jpg Screenshot_20210807-081848_Gallery.jpg
