    Hi All

    I have just joined TASA I have also just restarted the hobby of fish keeping. I have bought e new Juwel 260L tank. I have set it up and had it running with just my plants inside for 3 days. I then put nine goldfish in on Sunday just to get some bacteria growing in the tank. I introduced 4 Bronze Corys two algae eaters and two sailfin cats today. I intend to remove the goldfish this weekend and to introduce my 10 Rummynose Tetras and 22 Cardinals.

    Hello welcome. One tip. Dont add too much fish at once. Let your filter settle in over time

    Hi Philz... and a warm welcome to TASA!

    If you're cycling without b in a b (bacteria in a bottle) - then you're being a little hasty... perhaps you can give us more details on that?

    then, I'm assuming sailfin cats mean sailfin pleco's? Could you tell us what sort?

    And algae eaters? which? if you don't know - then post some pics... but in a brand new tank, what will they eat?

    Welcome! :hello: It does sound like a lot of fish in one go. Maybe leave it another week before you add the other fish and keep testing for ammonia and nitrates. If they go up be ready to do water changes.

    Hi and welcome to TASA.
    As the others said, don't add all the fish at once, maybe give it 2 weeks then add the rest.

    Thanks guys some good advice perhaps I need to slow down, my tank has been running for 7 days only. The "catfish" are actually gold longfin ancistrist bristlenose babies. The algae eaters I think are siamese algae eaters? Here's a photo.

    I have not heard of b in a b I will ask my local pet store if they can get me some, the sailfins are golden ancistrus babies about 3.5 cm. Please see the photo of one of my algae eaters and let me know if you recognise it. I intend feeding pleco wafers and cooked peas and cucumber?

    Thanks for the info the article was great, I am inclined to think mine are Siamese, they fit the description, I will try to get a better photo to post.

    @Philz Welcome...

    If your LFS doesn't have bacteria in a bottle, you could ask them for some of the brown gunky stuff in one of their filters. Then you can put that into your filter compartment. This will give the bacteria a jump start.

    Also, you should monitor your ammonia and especially NITRITE levels very carefully. Ammonia levels tend to rise within the first few days of starting a new tank with "virgin" equipment. NITRITE levels tend to suddenly spike after a week or two of setting up a new tank. This could cause great livestock losses. There are some visual sign that may indicate high levels of Nitrite or ammonia, for example: fish breath rappiddly, fish hang around the surface "gulping" air, fish scratch themselves (mostly gill area) against rocks and plants. All these symptoms are caused by ammonia or nitrite poisoning.
