I have this (reasonably) strong submersible filter in one of my outside (tropical) ponds.....

There is a hose connected to the discharge side of it and I've always discharged below water level, which resulted in a lot of water movement and circulation.

This afternoon, I raised the discharge hose to about 1.5m above water level..... wow!!.... this agitates the water (breaking the surface) and causes movement of the water to the effect that I could see the water clearing substantially within 2 hours.

So, just in case anyone has a question about the discharge of a filter.... my answer would be as high above the water level as you can afford.
