In my professional opinion it is indeed -a fish-
ha ha, looks to me like some sort of Oreochromis cichlid but would need a better pic to say which exact species...

    Intelligence??? PPFFFFFTTTT!!!

Oh SURE! We do know what it is.
    Even with a chimp's (or GDubbya's) IQ :p

But on the other hand, who accepts fish, from FRIENDS ..and then KNOWS they fast and aggressive and WANTS to KEEP them?

Just a reality check, not an insult...

Mind you, I can't help but think:
You could ask your pal where he GOT them from, or what HE knows about them and THEN get back to us?

They seem to have bit more irridescence than most Tilapiines..South African "kurper"

    I'd say EVERYBODY replied accurately:blink1:
Phil is closest sofar, if Oreochromis then most likely O mossambicus...

    But..again
Why should we take stabs in the dark?

YOU do some of the work here, and let us decide based on as much info as can be provided TO US

We'd LOVE to be of more help.....BUT.......

It's Oreochromis mossambicus, I caught the EXACT same fish in a local river, and grew it up to a fair size before IDing it. Get ready for a bigger tank...

Tilapia - Kurper - Bream - All the same thing, Regional names for Tilapia

The Mossambicus - if memory serves me - has 3 spots - in Zim it is known as the three spot bream - makes good eating :)

Given time, they'll get their colouring. The females mostly retain those lines, occasionally with the lines breaking up to form spots.

I'm pretty certain that we don't have an Haplochromis in our area (area being Southern Africa)...

If we can assume it's a cichlid, and again asume its Tilapiine, then yes, it's a river species, and they can also be found in ponds, lakes and estuaries.
