    Hi Guys,

seems our one fish may have Ich, I am raising the temperature to around 28 degrees to account for the cory and galaxy danio species in the tank as well as have removed the carbon from my dophin overhang sh280 filter.

I am adding in Tetra GeneralTonic plus which says it is a general remedy for bacterial infections including fin rot and mouth rot, ectoparasitic diseases (I am hoping this would cover the ich?) as well as dull membranes and fungal infections.

after following the instructions I see it says to remove the carbon, with the filter medium I have I unfortunately have carbon and zeoloite granules in a pod cartridge which you slide into the filter, I removed both of them. the course is 8 days long.

My question is whether I must keep the filter media out for 8 days, is this safe for the water health? and if its not can I leave it for a day Until I can get whatever the group recommend tomorrow. or when they say remove the filter media is it for like 30min for the medicine to take effect and then I add the cartirdges back again? they were super vague about it any help would be so appreciated

You'll want to keep the media out for the full duration of the chemical treatment. Carbon absorbs the medication, and so if you put it back while the treatment course is still in effect, you will remove the medication before it can act on the parasite.

However, you can add it back as soon as the treatment is done. Be sure that you are not continuing to see symptoms, otherwise you may need to repeat the treatment.

It is not hugely beneficial to run carbon on a tank. It usually helps keep water quite clear, and has some benefits of removing metals and chlorines from the water. However, these aren't your biggest concerns right now (especially if you use a good dechlorinator). You're quite safe to keep the carbon out as long as necessary.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain that. I had to also remove the zeolite....right now my filter is running with no sponge or zeolite as the filter+carbon+zeolite was an all in one filter media and the only way to remove the carbon was to take out the entire cartridge. Is the tank going to be fine without zeolite and filter pad for the 7 day course as per my instructions?

Is there nothing else in the filter at all? No sponge, or plastic balls, or ceramic rings?

What I listed above make up the "biological filter", but a part of that same process is achieved on the surfaces inside your aquarium. So even without those your tank will still function, just much less efficiently.

Keep the filter running anyway to ensure water movement and aeration in any case.
