I got my 5 new babies (Spotted red severums) 5 days ago. I had the 100l quarantine tank ready..and low and behold all of them got Ich. I followed the advice in the forum and got Flagyl at the chemist. Grind up the pills to power mix with warm water and into the tank. 6mg/Litre as per prof advice. Water temp at 28 degrees c. Tomorrow will be day number 3. I will do a 50% water change and give them another dose of 6mg/Litre of Flagyl. Then 3 days later another 50% water change.
    Question.
The white spot is over the fins and body but not too much. I noticed when I got them that the fins on all of them is torn and in some place it looks as if someone bite a piece out. Is this the ich? The other thing, I cannot see that there is an improvement after 3 days. am I too impatient? I do not want to lose any of them. It cost me nearly 1k for them.

They are eating and swimming normally. Big apetites on all of them. Playfull etc...
    Please advise...

What temperature are you keeping your fish at? It would also be best if you can take pictures and give as much information as possible so that the experienced TASA members can pinpoint the problem.

If it is white spot (and please first get the diagnosis) you could try to jack up the temperature to 29-30 degrees. I've been advised that white spot can't survive at that temperature.

i had white spot in my aquarium 2 weeks ago. just a mild case that was introduced when i added 3 new kuhli loaches. i fixed it by jacking the temp up to 32 degrees for 10 days.
the warmer the temp the faster the life cycle of the ICH up untill about 29 degrees wherethey do not breed anymore, then at 32 degrees the parasite dies.

but it must be said that a 32 degree treatment is not guaranteed to work, but it did for me. but the point is that it is best to put the temp to the highest possible that your fish can stand.

Feedback: It looks if the Flagyl did its job, I did a 50% water change yesterday up the temp to 30 degrees c and the babies looks ich free.... BUT....I would not recommend to anyone who keep severums to take the temp up to 30 degrees c. Last night at 21:00 I walked past the tank and saw ALL of my severums lying flat on the bottom, some upside down and the looked black. I immediately checked the temp, sitting steady at 30,4 deg c (digital). The wife and I drained some water and add cold water..as the temp went down to 29 deg c the Deacons upright themselves also the dark colour disipeared,I dropped the temp to 27deg c and all swimming around. This was a nearmiss...and I could have lost them.
I would NEVER take my temp above 27deg c. I think that some other species might be able to survive the temp but not the severums.
Thanks to all , my fishes now ich free, but will keep in isolation a while longer..10 days?

    regards

My tank is set at 29 (partly because white spot doesn't occur at this temp). Temp often goes up to 31. Never had a problem with any of my Severums or Deacons (or any other fish).
When they lights are out, they do tend to lie on the bottom, sometimes at funny angles. Level of temperature was probably not the problem, but the speed at which the temperature changed might have been an issue.

The temp was set 24 hours ago. Only one heater so it took about 4 hours to go from 27 to 30. I even up the airstones as I expected the oxygen to be less at that temp. Maybe that might be the issue..

Ich is gone, am at day 2 of second treatment of Flagyl. One more day then a waterchange. Question, I am tommorow in JHB for business so i will be back on friday. Can I postpone the waterchange for 2 days? Remember the flagyl is still present...

I am not sure oosie, I dont know how long the Flagyl will be active, rather do a early WC than leaving it 2 days IMO.
