I have a 315lt malawi tank with java ferns, vallis & anubia. My vallis have from 2m to 10cm. My anubia is turning yellow & dying fast but my java ferns are growing well. I used sera, plantmin & bio elite ferts. Now I'm using Kent Marine Pro Plant. I notice that my java ferns have perked up but others are showing very little signs of growth. From what I've read, looks like its a Iron problem. I see you guys are using steel nails @ roots but was thinking putting some nails in the sump or can I buy iron powder @ Dischem.

    Ph - 7.8
    3ft sump filter

    Please help!!!!!!!

If you have enough depth in your substrate, try putting the plants into a pot with palm peat (Available from nurserys) capped with sand and gravel. I did this a while ago, and added 4 x skywhites into my 1.5m, now I'm trying to stop my plants growing so fast....

From what i understand it will be pointless putting nails into your sump. The reason why ppl put nails in by the roots is so that the roots can grow around them and get there iron from the rust on the nails. i am not sure about iron powder in the water , i would imagine it would affect your water chemistry,i would just go for nails

Is your Anubias planted in the substrate or attached to something?

Nails are piontless in the sump, it will likely create a build up on your impeller too. Rather put a nail at the base of each plant. it will however stain the substrate, so bury it deep.

I wouldn't put nails in the substrate for Anubias... They should be out of the substrate. If the Rhizome is covered, they will die. So it's pointless putting in nails... Mind you, I wouldn't put nails in my tank in the first place... Try looking for Seachem Flourish Iron. Use as according to the instructions...

It's anubia & not anubias. I was also thinking of adding in organic compost that I found at a nursery for R80. I was thinking of putting 50% organic compost into the clay pots.

You can buy an iron additive for aquarium use... cant remember the name but I have it at home and will post once i've checked it.

Could always ask and LFS for an iron additive product

Same thing... Anubia IS anubius... You should not bury the rhizome! It will rot and the plant will die...

Don't add compost!! It becomes anaerobic and deadly gasses can build up and harm your fish!!

Rather mineralise topsoil... Do a google search for more info... But this takes a couple of months.

I'd still get Flourish Iron instead. It's more stable.

Actually the correct Latin spelling for the genus is Anubias and not Anubia.

If the plants are not in a fish tank, then no, it's fine... If you're going to put them in the tank, then rather go find some Root Tabs to pop in the pot.

Seachem Flourish Tabs are good, other kinds you get are Tetra and Sera root tabs...
