leave the convicts out, this is a awesome looking tank, now you just have to get the inside to match the outside.

hmmm add a few angles with 40 neons .. I did that to my lucky13 tank ... if the angles are small and added at the same time as the neons - well then it seems like the neons do not become angle food.

I would agree with everyone. Chuck out the malawi idea... they nice fish, but you can't do anything except with rocks into the tank. To me, a tank needs to be an artwork that is visually stimulating even if there is no fish. Having said that.. some people like different art to me... so if the rock and sand does it for you... go for it. (LOL)

I would go the planted route. A plain blue, or black background... a pair of angels and a few schooling fish, with some bottom feeders.

Don't chuck out the Malawi tank just yet - just because it's a Malawi tank, it doesn't mean that you can't have plants. Many species of cichlid from lake malawi don't eat plants; take for example the open water haps and peacocks. Not only that, they're stunningly colourful fish, very active, and can be bred in the home aquarium - some of the breed very easily as well.

As for plants, you can take the plastic plants route and do as you please, or you can grab some real plants - Vallis appreciates hard, alkaline water, and such plants are native to lake Malawi. I've recently added a whole bucn of Vallis to my open water Malawi tank and it really looks great.

I believe if you wanting to go the planted route... you will have to part with the oscars. (They eat plants)

(Now I hope that I am right here!)

Well if they don't eat them they will make sure they don't stay planted :)

fanie what plants do you have in the foreground? the carpet effect on the left is stunning and iv been looking to do something similar in my tank but cant find a suitable plant.

sorry for hijacking your thread shakester enjoy modeling your new tank i had a ball when i got mine, and dont think you have to buy your rock and wood long as the rock doesnt dissolve in water ( ie sandstone type ones) theres no reason you cant pick em up from all over i started bringing rocks home when i walked the dogs, they dug a trench for a pipeline here awhile back and theres lovely grey granite lying all over. just a thought if you wana cut down costs and theres some really interesting shapes out there that can be fitted together. oh and check the other sections to see if anyone near your has plants to give away or sell. you'd think planted tanks would be difficult but my 1.2m has just exploded and im going to have to trim some more this weekend lol.

    Glossostigma elatinoides

The carpet on the front left side of the scape is Glossostigma elatinoides.

    http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/plantfinder/details.php?id=57

Under ideal conditions it will flourish and produce a highly attractive carpet.
