Hydrogen Peroxide bath for BBA

Hi gents and lady's,

I tried searching but didn't find any info for this instance.

So I have a pretty bad outbreak of BBA on my crpyts and anubias and want to treat it with Hydrogen Peroxide but not sure on the dosage, strength and time frame. I plan on doing a reshuffle with my tanks so will be removing all the plants and soaking them.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

 

I usually dose 3% at 1-2ml a day on my 60l, I turn off the filter for 15 minutes before then spot dose with a syringe.

 

I use a bleach dip for my Anubia and decor. 1 cup bleach and 18 cups of water. Dip for 3 minutes and wash off with tap water. I works amazingly well.

 

I use citric acid - 1.5 cups of water to 1 tsp citric acid. Also works well. I have also used both the peroxide spot treatment and the bleach dip. They all work. Just depends on whats available and what you want to do.

I use peroxide if I dont want to move the tank about. The bleach works on tough plants while the citric acid works on more delicate plants that tend to die after a bleach dip.

 

This is what I'm dealing with. All the plants will be removed as I am switching tanks between my freshwater and saltwater.

I just wasn't sure on the dosage and the length, Ill add all to a bucket and let them soak in there. Since it will just be the plants in there, what is the max dosage I can use?

I have bleach on hand but will have to get h2o2 or citric acid.

It must be unscented bleach. A 5 % solution will do the trick. Just put them in for about a minute, then dip in water to rinse the bleach off and you are good to go. BBA should turn pink when it dies. If I recall correctly this happens quite quickly - I want to say an hour or 2.

 

The bleach I have should be unscented. Will give that a try first. I want to get rid of as much as possible before I add the plants back. Ive noticed that some of the wood has BBA as well, does the same method apply here?

 

How long until the BBA falls off?

 

If he cuts the most affected parts he won't have any plants left.

 

Used the bleach and noticed the BBA on the anubias turned green but haven't checked again. A lot of crypt leaves were removed/ fell off. Tomorrow will tell what the out come is.

 

So the first bleach bath didnt do much. gave it a second bath yesterday and the BBA turned white. I take it this is a good sign and that it will fall off or should I have pulled it off?

 

It will fall off on its own. Its too much of a mission to pull it all off.

 

Spot treatment, removal etc is all a cosmetic cure, you need to find the root cause.

It is amazing to watch the entire tank bounce back once the balance has been established. When BBA has no reason to grow and things return to normal.

Long overdue update. After the 2nd dip, all the BBA died off but some of the crypts took strain and melted a bit however they are making a slow recovery but think that is due to the light which I suspect is a bit under powered for the tank.

 

Crypts can do that. I once changed from a sponge filter to a power head, the additional water flow caused the leaves to fall off. Crypts dont seem to like change but recover over time.
