Howdy.

Hi. My names Kevin and I lurk in the Midrand area. Been keeping fresh water aquarium fish for about a year now but recently lost my fish. In starting fresh, I decided to try my hand at a planted low tech aquarium with a potting soil substrate. Taking things slow but will post pics as a go along. Thanks. After i lost the fish, I literally threw out all that was in the tank and am looking to start fresh. Will make sure my plants and the ecosystem are near perfect before I get more fish.

Welcome and good luck with the planted tank.

Make sure you also keep lighting, lighting period and ferts in mind as well.

Thanks. Will be installing led lighting when I am back from my holiday so that should be fine. Ferns have been a bit of a mix bag for me cos there are so many options. Heard of something called Metricide 14 that is supposed to be like Excel. Still investigating.

 

Make sure the led's are between 6000 - 8000K.

Excel is liquid co2, not so much a fert. Do some research on EI (Estimated Index) Ferts. Its cheap and works really well.
