How to remove silicone from glass

Hi all.
I want to try a DIY repair on a small tank.
How do you remove silicone from the seam between two sides of a tank?
Basically what I want to do is remove the silicone from a corner and repair/reseal it.
Do I just slash away with a blade/scalpel, or this there an easier/better way?

I cut it away most of the times.... just use a stanley knife and get as close to the glass as possible.

Could try thinners or turps but not sure if this would eat sufficiently away at the silicon?

 

I usually use the LION stainless steel blades as they are allot thinner and sharper than the stanley blades. Also nice and flexible to clean with. BUT be very careful with them, they'll cut your fingers.

 

try silicone stripper? I'm sure I've seen it somewhere, probably builders...

 

Silicone stripper is highly toxic, so be sure to clean & flush the tank more than normal.

I have found that if you use thin piano / guitar string with a wooden handle at the ends, it works great.

 

Strip with a sharp blade as the others have indicated and then remove the rest with a fine steel brush, it gets every last bit of the silicone off the glass, after which you wash the glass with a detergent in hot water, flush with clean water and dry the glass with a cloth. It is important to remove all traces of oiliness which the silicon rubber leaves behind.

Well like some of the guys i have used a thin LIONlike blade and as well as fishing line,although it keeps snapping you will get the hang of it,does not damage the corner of the glass as iano wire might.

 

I use a blade to scrape off as much silicone as i can..then i pour a little methylated spirits down the seam..wait a few seconds,then use fishing line..works like a charm..the methylated spirits kinda dissolves the little silicone left between the glass..so you dont struggle cutting through it with fishing line
