I have an establish growth of Java moss on some drift wood.
What is the proper way to take out some for a new piece of wood?

You basically can thin it out by removing a few strands and tie it down on the new piece of wood with black cotton.

I do not want to go ripping away, cause it's growing really well.
I do not want to mess it up or leave open patches.
At the moment I am collecting every small piece that comes loose
    takes ages
If all else fails - will just have to buy another load
Thought there would be some trick to do this

Try just cutting a small peace maybe the size of a golf ball.

Java moss grows like a weed, so anything you pull off will grow right back in a matter of weeks. There's no reason to be finicky with it :)

Java moss loves moving water. When you fertilize it, you get faster growth and greener growth. Your fish provide plenty of fertilizer most of the time...

Mine is mostly directly in the flow of the pumps, so that could be what makes it grow so fast.

Don't contradict your intent with your actions

    :p khalid!!

Outer, fresher growth of moss is better supplied with light, flow, nutrients, etc.
So, Bushier growth retards overall "health" by restricting above....

You MUST think of it like this:
Would you replant cut-out lawn sections, albeit small, and allow regrowth over baldspots( pun intended)??
    Of course you would.
Advantageously, you can snag, or crop, or pull loose some amount from the tumble of moss and just tie on with cotton, or fix with rubber bands.

You are according anthropomorphism and aesthetics too subjectively my friend. :blink1:
Moss won't FEEL a thing, and still LOOK GOOD!

Just GO IN, and tug out a bit at a time.

Enough to fill a matchbox is more than required to start a new patch quickly.

Faster growth is achieved when placed sparsely anyway..whether it's to recover "donor" moss, or to cover new substrate wih "transplant" moss material new attached growth is rapid!

I do this regularly for friends, clients, and wholesaler takes my excess.

    hmmm:wondering:
I have PLENTY mopani wood in my stores. A fair amount of moss too....

Maybe I can market this to the trade???
O'seas "Moss on Wood" is a staple planted decor item.....
