how much sand

    how many 40kg bags will i need for a substrate for my 1.2m by 45cm tank

    1 bag should give you a nice cover, plus enough depth for plant roots.

    i have about a 5liter icecream tub of sand less than one bag in my 3ft, it gives me about 4+ cm to plant in...

    your tank is alot bigger than a standard 3ft

    what type of substrate are you using? gravel or sand?

    carl, just do a bit of reading about what you need for a planted tank substrate, like peat vermiculite etc etc, you then just cover this with your gravel
